A creature collector JRPG

Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remaster is a Japanese role-playing game (JRPG) that is a remaster of a popular game that was released in 2003 for the PlayStation 2 console. The game features a creature collector mechanic in which the player must do battle with various demon creatures.

Being a remake of a popular JRPG, it would be easy to compare this game to something like the Final Fantasy VII Remake. However, perhaps a more apt comparison would be something from the Pokemon universe, such as Pokemon: Revolution, due to the creature collector element of the game.

Save the world from the darkness

The story of Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remaster starts out with a normal day in Tokyo. Things soon turn bad when the Conception — an ethereal apocalypse — is invoked, and the remains of the world are swallowed by chaos. The player must venture out into a world overrun by a demonic revolution and make important choices that will shape the future of the world.

Turn-based combat and exploration

Like most JRPG games, the core gameplay of Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remaster is that of exploration and turn-based combat. The player can explore the world as they wish, with encounters taking place in a separate game mode where the player is locked in combat until the battle is over.

A remaster with issues

Being a remaster, Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remaster has the advantage of an existing fan base that enjoyed the game the first time it was released. Unfortunately, many of those players have complained that the graphics are too restrictive, such as locking the resolution to 1080p, and that the game is too expensive.

PROS

  • Complete graphics overhaul from the original game
  • Adds new difficulty settings
  • Ability to choose between English and Japanese voiceovers
  • Features multiple endings depending on the player’s actions through the game

CONS

  • Graphics options are somewhat restrictive (max 1080p at 30FPS, for example)
  • Many players have complained that the game is overpriced for a basic remaster
